Job Description


- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Experience working with at-risk youth and their families. (Education may be considered the equivalent of experience)
- Experience and willingness to work with people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds
- Other skills: Must posses excellent organizational, analytical, writing, and processing skills. Should be able to perform conflict resolution or crisis intervention and have excellent communication skills. Conduct individual and group counseling

Additional Qualifications

- Able to get health clearance and TB test
- Fingerprint Clearance, including DOJ, FBI, and Child Abuse Index (submitted prior to employment)

Lines of Supervision

- The Residential Counselor reports directly to the Program Manager


The primary role of the Residential Counselor is the protection and safety (physical and mental) of each resident in placement, as well as the correction of the problems which brought the resident into placement.

In the Group Home

- Be fully aware and supportive of the policies and procedures of Corbett Group Homes, Inc.
- Carry out of the prescribed treatment plan for each resident in your care
- Generate confidence and trust with members of the community, referrings agencies, licensing, neighbors, and the courts

With the Residents

- Create a supportive and structured setting favorable for the growth and development of each child in the program
- Provide for the physical, personal, and health needs for each child
- To motivate the residents to participate in non-delinquent activities
- Help the residents to understand and begin to accept responsibility for their behaviors and their lives
- Assist the residents in developing self-esteem and enhancing confidence in school work, relationships, recreation, and athletic activities
- Provide appropriate interventions during times of conflict or crisis


Include but are not limited to:

- Help maintain a positive atmosphere in the group home
- To provide appropriate supervision at all times for residents
- Administration of discipline, in conjunction with treatment team, and setting of limits for behaviors
- To provide an appropriate role model to residents while maintaining a professional and ethical relationship (not identifying with or self-disclosing to residents)
- Be on time for your designated shifts each week and notifying supervisor in case of emergency
- To supervise residents in maintaining a clean and healthy environment and to report/log all needed repairs
- To log all relevant information into the group home logs (daily log and medication log), prepare Incident Reports as required
- To follow through on medical and other emergencies as needed for residents
- To execute planned recreation activities safely and appropriate
- To participate in supervision and staff training
- To participate in staff and group meetings
- To communicate to the schools or other service providers, the problems and status of individual residents
- To be responsible for special activities when called upon. Special activities include but are not limited to: field trips, family work, medical appointments, intramural sports activities etc.
